Exponents are everywhere in math, science, and everyday writing: x squared, 10 to the power of 3, ion charges like Ca2+, and ordinals like 1st. The problem is that keyboards do not have a simple exponent key. This page fixes that. Every exponent character below is ready to copy and paste, no signup and no app needed.
What is exponent copy and paste?
Exponent copy and paste means grabbing ready-made superscript characters and dropping them into your own text. Instead of learning alt codes or formatting menus, you click the exponent you need, for example ², ³, or ⁺, and paste it into a document, a chat message, or a social media bio. The characters are real Unicode text, so they keep their raised look wherever plain text is accepted.
Superscript digits and signs
The building blocks of every exponent are the superscript digits ⁰ through ⁹ and five signs:
| Character | Name | Common use |
|---|---|---|
| ⁰ ¹ ² ³ ⁴ ⁵ ⁶ ⁷ ⁸ ⁹ | Superscript digits | Powers, exponents, footnotes |
| ⁺ ⁻ | Superscript plus and minus | Positive and negative powers, ion charges |
| ⁼ ⁽ ⁾ | Superscript equals and parentheses | Grouped exponents like 10⁽⁻³⁾ |
Combine them freely. 10⁶ means ten to the power of six, xⁿ means x to the power of n, and Ca²⁺ is a calcium ion with a double positive charge.
Common powers worth copying
- Squares and cubes: x², x³, y², a³, the squares and cubes students use most.
- Powers of ten: 10², 10³, 10⁶, 10⁹, the shorthand of science and engineering notation.
- Ions and charges: Na⁺, Ca²⁺, Fe³⁺, Cl⁻, OH⁻, the charges you see in chemistry.
- Ordinals: 1ˢᵗ, 2ⁿᵈ, 3ʳᵈ, 4ᵗʰ, dates and rankings with a polished look.
How to type exponents on any device
On a computer, you can use a superscript generator, copy the result, and paste it. In Word, select text and press Ctrl plus Shift plus the plus key. In Google Docs, use Format, then Text, then Superscript. On a phone, keyboards have no built-in exponent key, so a copy and paste library like this one is the fastest route: copy here, paste into your app.
Exponents vs superscripts: is there a difference?
An exponent is a mathematical idea, a number that tells you how many times to multiply a value by itself. A superscript is the raised character used to write it. In practice, people use the words interchangeably when they search for copy and paste exponents, because the superscript character is what you actually paste. This page covers both: the characters and the math behind them.
Why some exponents show as boxes
If an exponent shows as a box or a blank, your device font is missing that Unicode glyph. The character itself is valid. Updating your system fonts or switching to a common style like ² or ³ usually fixes it, because those two have the widest font support of all superscript characters.
Frequently asked questions
What is exponent copy and paste?
Exponent copy and paste is copying ready-made superscript characters, such as ², ³, and ⁺, and pasting them into your own text. It is the fastest way to write powers, ions, and ordinals without formatting menus or alt codes.
How do I type exponents like ² and ³ on my keyboard?
On Windows, hold Alt and type 0178 for ² or 0179 for ³ on the numeric keypad. On any device, the simpler route is to copy the exponent from a library like this one and paste it where you need it.
Why do some exponents show as boxes?
Your device font is missing the glyph for that Unicode character. The character is valid, but the font cannot draw it. Updating your system fonts, or using widely supported characters like ² and ³, fixes it in most cases.
Can I use exponent characters in Instagram and Discord?
Yes. Exponent characters are plain Unicode text, so they paste into Instagram bios, Discord names, TikTok captions, and WhatsApp messages exactly as shown here.
What is the difference between superscript and exponent notation?
An exponent is the math concept, a power like x to the power of 2. A superscript is the raised character used to write it, like the ² in x². People usually mean the superscript character when they search for exponents to copy and paste.
