Blackletter typefaces were the dominant printing style across much of Europe for centuries before being gradually replaced by the simpler Roman letterforms used today. Unicode's Fraktur block exists mainly to support historical and mathematical typesetting.
Capital C, H, I, R, and Z use separate older Unicode characters rather than following the same numbering as the rest of the block — a historical quirk in how the standard was built up over time.
